EBSCO Publishing Partners with Arte Público Press — Will Create New Digital Collection Covering U.S. Hispanic Literature and Culture

—Key aspects of the “Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project” to be digitized

IPSWICH, Mass., USA – Nov. 20, 2008 –
EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has partnered with Arte Público Press to provide a new digital collection of historical content pertaining to U.S. Hispanic literature and culture. In conjunction with Arte Público, EBSCO is digitizing key aspects of the "Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project."

Under the direction of Dr. Nicolás Kanellos, the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project is a national project to locate, preserve and disseminate Hispanic culture of the United States in its written form since colonial times until 1960.

The Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project has compiled a comprehensive bibliography of more than 17,000 records of books and pamphlets produced by Latinos in the United States until 1960. Holdings available at the project include: thousands of original books, a microfilm collection of approximately 900 historical newspapers, more than 1,500 religious books in microfilm and digitized form, numerous archival and manuscript collections, a vast collection of photographs, an extensive authority list, and more than 30 reprinted historical books in scholarly editions.

The initial collection to be digitized includes approximately 60,000 historical articles and 1,100 historical books. Approximately 80% of the content is in Spanish and 20% is in English. The content will be indexed and searchable in both Spanish and English and is expected to be released in the second half of 2009.

Dr. Kanellos says, "We are excited to be working with EBSCO on this very important program which will make the Recovery Project content widely available to libraries, institutions and researchers worldwide."

The project adds to a growing collection of digital archive projects for EBSCO. The company is also digitizing content from the American Theological Library Association and the American Antiquarian Society.
